Gotta lose some weight

I weight about 67 kilos and would like to weight about three pounds less.

In the past, I have used a pretty simple diet: eat whatever I want during the day; then run at night and don't eat afterwards. This always works, probably because most of my bad snacking happens at night.

These days, though, the Girl works almost every night, leaving me to watch the Lorax. He usually is in a bad mood in the evening so running with the baby jogger is unreliable.

My new plan: calorie counting. I have done this once before, for about three days; Then I went nuts and stopped counting. I like the scientific feel to knowing what I put in my body. It might be fun, actually. I'll aim at 2500-3000 calories a day, which will hopefully yield a slow weight loss.

Of course, the Girl will offer her input in this matter as well. If I am her running coach, she can be my dietician. The way I have slowly gotten her to take an easy day here and there, she has taught me the term "sugar cereal".

We just posted on this topic. Unlike you, we are trying to lose serious weight (25-30 lbs), and are not in good enough condition to put in serious miles to make it all melt away. We've been low carbing it, which works quite well. I am also interested in just how much carbs a person needs, given that distance running mostly burns fat anyway. I don't know if you have posted on this topic- if so, or if you know of someone else who's put in some effort, please let me know where to look. Otherwise, I am putting in some research time on this and other topics and will share my thoughts at some point. I'd be interested in your views on our post on exercise and weight loss however, if you have the time.

I once counted how many calories I took in. 6800. That's not a typo. Of course, I was counting only because I knew it'd be unusual. Still, I average 4000 when running very high mileage!

For Drs. Cynthia and David: as the brain and red blood cells use only glucose, there's a basal need of 75 grams of carbohydrate per day; this can, however, be formed from gluconeogenesis, so one could theoretically live without carbs.

Since you're a guy you will probably lose the weight by just thinking about it. :p Girls have the tougher row to hoe.

I agree with Steve that you can live without carbs (hence the Atkins success). But it puts the body into a crisis mode that I don't think is beneficial. The Girl just quoted a big study where the Mediterrenean diet beat Atkins in a bunch of parameters (recent issue of New England Journal of Medicine, I believe). I definitely feel Atkins is fading out.

Danni, I know what you mean. It's not fair. Then again, you women can bear babies and you generally look better; you can "chick" guys at races.
